What is Invisalign Teen?

Clear Orthodontic Aligners Video

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen utilize advanced 3-D computer technology to create a series of customized and removable aligners based off of images, x-rays, and impressions of a patient’s teeth. Invisalign works to gradually straighten a patient’s smile over time – like braces – only Invisalign uses these plastic aligners to shift teeth instead of metal wires and brackets. You’ll need to wear each set of aligners for two weeks, following a designated order. After each two-week period, you’ll move onto the next set. You’ll do this until you’ve worn every set of aligners and you’ve achieved the newly-straightened smile that was prescribed by your orthodontist.

An Aligner Just for Teens

While Invisalign has been offered to adults for over a decade, it hasn’t been recommended for teens until just recently. The reason for this is because many teens still have permanent teeth that are erupting. This can potentially disturb Invisalign’s precisely-planned movement of the teeth. As an added problem, many orthodontists believed that teens wouldn’t actually wear their aligners the 22 hours per day that they require to be effective.

Invisalign teen.Thankfully, with technological improvements and advancements, Invisalign Teen is here to provide the same great benefits of Invisalign in a form that’s perfectly suited for teenagers. Invisalign Teen comes with eruption tabs built in – tabs that are designed to hold space for teeth that haven’t fully erupted yet. Also, the aligners feature compliance indicators, which appear as small colored dots on the back of the aligners. When a patient is wearing his or her aligners as often as prescribed, these dots will start to fade away, indicating that a patient is being compliant with the Invisalign usage.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign provides many benefits in comparison to traditional metal braces. Some of these advantages include the following:

  • Like its name suggests, the aligners are clear and virtually invisible, meaning that you’ll be privy to a discreet orthodontic treatment.
  • Invisalign is removable and only needs to be worn for 22 hours a day, which means that you can take them out for any important events.
  • While braces will require you to avoid foods that are hard or sticky because of the damage they can cause to the orthodontics, there are no eating restrictions when you use Invisalign. You just simply remove your aligners and eat what you enjoy.
  • Because the aligners are removable, cleaning your teeth remains a simple process.
  • Invisalign’s polyurethane plastic aligners provide much more comfort than the metal wires and brackets of braces.
  • The aligners are durable and you’re less likely to have to schedule additional appointments due to your orthodontics breaking.
